Kitchen appliances that earn their counter space
In this guide
Air fryers
What to check before buying:
- Capacity โ 2โ3 L suits 1โ2 people ยท 4โ6 L suits 3โ5 people ยท buying too large wastes power and counter space
- Wattage โ 1,200โ1,800 W ยท higher cooks faster and crisps better but draws more power per unit of time
- Removable, dishwasher-safe basket โ critical; if it is hard to clean you will stop using it
- Automatic shake or stir โ saves you opening the drawer mid-cook
On electricity: despite higher wattage than a microwave, cook times are much shorter
(15โ25 minutes), so energy per meal is not dramatically higher than a full oven.
Blenders
- Motor power โ 300โ400 W is fine for fruit smoothies ยท 800 W+ for ice and hard ingredients
- Blades โ stainless steel and removable for cleaning (mind your hands)
- Jug material โ glass is more durable but heavier ยท plastic is lighter but scratches easily
- Speeds plus a pulse mode โ pulse gives you control over texture
Rice cookers
- Heating system โ conventional hotplate (cheaper) versus induction (IH, pricier but more even)
- Capacity โ 1.0 L is roughly 5โ6 cups ยท 1.8 L is roughly 10 cups
- Inner pot โ thicker coating lasts longer; make sure it lifts out for cleaning
- Sticky rice mode โ if sticky rice is your staple, look for a dedicated mode
The electrical detail people forget
Many kitchen appliances draw serious current. Running them at once can trip the breaker:
| Appliance | Approximate draw |
|---|---|
| Air fryer | 1,200โ1,800 W |
| Microwave | 800โ1,200 W |
| Induction rice cooker | 1,000โ1,400 W |
| Blender | 300โ1,000 W |
| Electric kettle | 1,500โ2,200 W |
Tip: on a 16 A circuit, do not run the air fryer, kettle and microwave simultaneously โ
stagger them.
