Kitchen appliance energy cost calculator

Add up what your kitchen appliances actually cost to run — and find out whether you are near your circuit limit.

Why wattage alone does not tell you the cost

Two appliances with the same wattage can cost very different amounts to run, because what matters is wattage × time. An air fryer at 1,500 W for 20 minutes uses less energy than a slow cooker at 200 W for 8 hours.

That is why this calculator asks for minutes per use and uses per week, not just the wattage on the box.

The circuit limit most people ignore

Most home kitchen circuits are rated 16 A or 20 A. At 220–240 V that is roughly 3,500–4,800 W total.

Run an air fryer (1,500 W), an electric kettle (2,000 W) and a microwave (1,000 W) at the same moment and you are at 4,500 W — enough to trip a 16 A breaker. This is not a fault; it is the breaker doing its job.

Practical fix: stagger high-draw appliances by a few minutes rather than upgrading the breaker. Upgrading the breaker without upgrading the wiring is genuinely dangerous.
